I had the idea for a site like this just the other day. If only more people used it we might get a little closer to this democracy thing I keep hearing about.

Ahh, Big Brave Brendan... Here's an article from a few years ago that shines a very different light on this topic. http://insideindonesia.org/edit46/elliott.htm It appears illegal fishing has been a problem in Australia for over 300 years!

Mercifully it's not at the expense of one of Paul Keating's appointments. Michael Kirby, on the other hand, will retire in 2009 meaning Howard will have 6 out of 7 appointments if he wins the next election. It'll take Rudd two terms to reverse the stacking even if he wins this coming election, provided he's in any way interested in reversing the descent into conservative tyranny (which I doubt).

While I'm not huge on the concept of a mandatory national curriculum generally, I can't really agree with the idea of lowering the voting limit without introducing some thorough non-partisan education on the way the system works. Also, we seem to have a lot of variance about where the arbitrary line that divides children and adults is set. For voting rights, the right to drink on licensed premesis and the right to a license to drive a motor vehicle (amongst many other things, I'm sure), it's 18. That's all nice and consistent. When it deviates from 18 it seems to be tipped towards the least favourable impact on the youth. For legal financial independence from one's parents it's 25 (unless you make around $16,000 over 18 months or your parents are poor - actual figures may have changed in the last few years), meaning if you live away from home and your parents make too much money but won't give you any, serious study is extremely difficult unless you've worked full time for long enough to qualify for the starvation ration that is Youth Allowance (unless they've changed the name of that too... something like YouthStart, YoungChoices, UniPlus, or some other meaningless PascalCased marketing bullshit designed to sugarcoat the poisoned pill). The age of full legal responsibility in the state of Victoria is 17 although they can try anyone from age 10 as an adult if they want. In the (admittedly very unlikely) event that some 12 year old kid kills and eats his nana, the media lose their collective shit about this "new face of evil" and taint all possible jurors beyond the hope of a just outcome with their sensationalist garbage, you chuck in a judge who is big on Texas... well, as far fetched as it seems, just as they can theoretically legally lock you up for the murkily defined act of "bringing the sovereign into disrepute", this kid could be dangling from the Bolte Bridge alongside Ronald Ryan. For public transport tickets I'm pretty sure you have to buy the Full Fare when you're over 4 now, and if your mum was under the very much mistaken impression you're entitled to ride for free you had better hope she put extra dough into that private health fund for dental. Would it make more sense to tie the age of eligibility to vote in with a single age at which you can be considered a responsible adult? Why have ten arbitrary lines when one will do?

I'm pretty big on the lowering the voting age limit. It might even get people interested in politics at an early stage in life.
